1-to-1 Photography Lesson For Beginners

  • Perfect for beginners
  • Learn the fundamentals of photography
  • Understand how your camera works
  • 4 hour lesson at my home near Carmarthen, online via Zoom or at any location in south Wales

My 1-to-1 photography lesson for beginners is a 4 hour introduction to photography, tailored to your shooting ability and style – whatever you want to learn, and whatever you want to shoot. I’m very pleased that many of my clients return to me to learn advanced techniques as their skills develop.

We begin with a short presentation teaching the theory, then we head out to put these ideas into practice. My belief is that you learn best by doing – I’m with you every step of the way to guide you from finding a shot, composing it, then selecting the right camera settings to capture the moment.

There’s no such thing as a silly question, and I will explain everything to you without jargon. My goal is that you leave the lesson equipped with all the information and motivation you need to take the photos you want.

Why learn with me

I'm an award-winning professional photographer and have been working full time since 2017, publishing 2 books and delivering lectures and workshops nationwide.

I have taught several hundred photographers just like you, of all ages and abilities. My approach is no-nonsense, minimum jargon as possible, with lots of practical examples to help you understand by doing.

My beginnings with photography were humble and my formative years were spent wrestling with equipment that was beyond my skill level, and frustration that I couldn’t get the camera to do what I wanted it to. I realise now that the best investment you can make in photography is not equipment, but experience. You can throw hundreds if not thousands of pounds at camera bodies, lenses, tripods and such… which is all for nothing if you don’t understand how to capture the shots you want.

I promise you a fun, friendly and non-judgmental environment to practice your craft, ask the questions you need to, and leave inspired to take your photography to the next level.

Here's what some of my previous students have to say.

Mathew explains things clearly and is a patient teacher. He listened to what I wanted out of the workshop and I came away with some brilliant photos.

David

Cardiff Workshop

I was a competent photographer but needed my hand held to get to the next level. Mathew took me on a photo tour of Tenby to teach me how to get great photos on a tripod with loads of little tips and tricks I'd never have thought of. My photos were amazingly colourful and crisp even with an entry level camera. Well worth the investment!

Susan

Tenby Workshop

I joined Mathew at very short notice for a night photography course in Pembrokeshire. He taught me how to capture beautiful photos of the night sky in a part of the country with very little light pollution. An amazing experience!
